Valamar Morgans Farm News

  Spring 2008

Greetings everyone. Spring has arrived and its so nice to see all that winter hair come off the horses. We have several of our Morgans for sale , hoping to find that special home for them. . Several colts will be for sale. Some will be geldings in a few weeks. We are gearing up for the Great Oaks Driving Trial to be held the weekend of April 26, 27th. I will be taking Valamar Dahlia , who is a 5 yr old that we raised. This will be her and my very first time at an event like this. Originally I had planned to take Randallane Dayspring, aka Yankee to this but was cautioned that with taking a filly I would have way less complications since this was to be my first competition. Yankee is a good boy but Dahlia will be much easier. I need to put all my concentrations on the event. Since I switched horses midway , Dahlia and I have not had the driving time in but things should go well, she seems to have caught on much faster than I in the cones and dressage practice. I want to add that all our young horses are handled with thoughts of them becoming driving horses in their future. With the price of gas we all might need a good driving horse to take us to work. Hope this finds everyone enjoying their horses. Come see us, phone 334-524-6514

Val Jones and her Morgan mare Dahlia in Newnan GA at the Spring 2008 Driving Trial

Great Oaks HDT           by Val Jones          Valamar Morgans             Waverly, AL

I had the pleasure of competing at the Great Oaks HDT this past weekend,  which took the place of the Georgia International CDE.  The event was held on Charlene and Tom Hildenburg’s farm in Newnan, Georgia. My goal was to learn as much as possible while enjoying myself and making sure my pony was happy and not stressed. This was a first time event for me and also my pony.  Cones were on the air strip and were long , narrow and tricky with courses set up for training and prelim.  The marathan course was a blend of driving across the pastures, down the air strip and through the woods.  The water hazard was made from natural water and looked scary but the entries drove thru it fairly well.  Dressage was in a great flat spot, one had to travel quite a ways to get to it. There was warmup in the infield of the hazards and around the dressage arena.  Valamar Dahlia is 5 this year and she stayed calm throughout the weekend despite all the noise, every one has a ATV or golf cart as too much walking if one doesn’t have one.  I plan to contact some of the people I met at the event and take some lessons and clinics with Dahlia. I think the most important good thing that came from this weekend away was that I got my pony out there and by doing this I feel that I promoted the Morgan horse.

Clearwater Morgans – Farm News

Duke and I will be doing our annual demonstration and Burns Nursing Home in Russellville, Alabama on May 13th, 2008. Duke always is a big hit there and the residents love to pet him and talk to him when the demonstration is over.  If anyone would like Duke and me to come to a nursing home, school, birthday party, or other function, please let me know at least 2 weeks in advance. I don't charge a regular fee, but I do ask that I be reimbursed for my fuel since fuel prices have gone up so much lately. I ask for .75 per mile.

Handy Tips – by Pat Cargile

Got a nasty oozing cut on your horse?  Maybe the vet put a drain tube in… For a neat clean-up, use Pam cooking spray to spray under the wound where the sticky drainage globs up on the hair - you’ll find a simple wipe-up is all that is needed. Apply Pam to clean dry hair where the drainage is expected to land.

Tip #2 –

Keep sanitary napkins in your vet box. They make super bandages and padding inside the hoof. Secure them with the new product “Gorilla tape” from the Gorilla Glue Company; it lasts longer than duct tape!

NOT A PRETTY STORY

On Saturday, March 15, LVF Misty aborted sometime during the storms at night or early in the morning out in the pasture.  When she came in to eat, Ray noticed the placenta was hanging out of her.  I walked the back pasture and, of course, found the foal in the furthermost corner of the property.  Buzzards had gotten to it.  Most of its body was intact but I couldn't tell if it was a filly or colt.  It felt like 50 - 60 lbs but by the time I got it near the barn, I thought maybe 70 lbs.

At 7:00 PM Saturday night, she still hadn't passed the placenta after two shots of Oxytocin so I called the vet.  He told me to give her a shot every 10 - 15 minutes until she went into labor.  After the first shot tonight, she went down and we left her.  Ray went back later and gave her four more shots.

We took her to the vet on Sunday afternoon after more shots every 10 – 15 minutes and she still hadn’t passed the afterbirth. The vet gave her more shots of Oxytocin.  Finally, he decided he’d better check her because she still hadn’t expelled the afterbirth.  It took a bit of time but he pulled another foal out. It was a dead  filly.  I have now lost count of how many shots of Oxytocin she got -- it was around 20 or more.  The afterbirth was still retained so she got more Oxytocin, Bute, Banamine, Penicillin and infused her 3 times.  He was concerned about preventing laminitis and founder.

She finally passed the afterbirth on Monday around noon and on Tuesday, she came back home.

The Vet explained that the problem was her uterus was contracting in two directions – the front was pushing out and the back part was pushing toward the foal -- and that is why she couldn’t have the second foal.  Neither foal had any hair.  The second one was not only smaller but was not as developed as the first one.  It will forever be a mystery as to whether they were twins or conceived at two different times.

Misty was due in May.  She was ultrasounded in July 2007 and had been pasture bred by Blaze (Open Road Blaze of Glory) from April to July.   We never saw them breed but I thought she had odd behavior because she would follow him around a lot.  I thought she hadn’t settled until the ultrasound which didn’t show twins.

Misty is doing fine but we won’t try to breed her until next year and will find out then if any damage was done.
